I volunteered at my first out-of-the-shelter animal shelter event yesterday. It was a patio restaurant kind of thing–a 3-course meal for dogs (and food for people, too). Volunteers were paired with an actual server who dealt with all the people-food and drinks, and any other issues.
There was a dog Halloween costume contest. (And some people in costumes, too. But it’s hard to compete with a cute fuzz-ball.) The dogs were adorable! Some of the costumes were really elaborate. That’s a big difference between cats and dogs–I can’t see too many cats tolerating that.

I got in the spirit with a cat-ear headband, a handmade collar with a pet tag, and these awesome socks.
The first course was mixed greens, cheese, and a bacon dressing. I didn’t think you could get a dog to eat greens–I know they’re omnivores, but I thought it was more along the lines of the chicken-rice-veggies second course. (Or the peanut butter and yogurt pop for dessert.) Some of the dogs were more enthused than others, but they seemed to at least like the bacon dressing.
Which is the solution for anything food related, really–put bacon on it.
Maple donut?
Put bacon on it!
Steak?
Put bacon on it!
Green beans?
Put bacon on it!
