—Hope no one ate themselves into a turkey coma!—

Day 23 – Favorite mythical place in a book.

(Isn’t it funny how many of your favorite settings aren’t places you’d actually want to live in? There’s always some small problems–no technology, dangerous magic–and a larger danger–a sweeping war, a deadly virus, a zombie scourge. Makes traffic seem not so bad…)

Mine is Discworld, Terry Pratchett’s creation.

The Discworld is a disc, on the back of four elephants standing on a sea turtle swimming through space. Magic is real here–there are witches, wizards, vampires, werewolves, dwarves, elves, and dragons.

Wizards mostly teach at Unseen University and avoid casting big spells that would destroy the world, vampires have a Temperance (no blood) league, and all dwarves used to be ‘male’ until some decided they wanted to braid their beards and put fancy engraving on their axes.

It’s a strange, hilarious, magical world.

Witches Granny and Nanny Ogg, Tiffany Aching and the tiny but violent Wee Free Men, and Death (Who Speaks LIKE THIS and rides a pale horse named Binky) and his schoolteacher granddaughter Susan are some of my favorites. Along with Rincewind the hapless wizard, Captain of the Guard Sam Vimes…

I could go on, but you get the idea.
