April’s choice for the Pride & Prejudice Bicentenary Challenge: 2005 movie
This is what really started my love of Pride & Prejudice. I had read P & P before I saw this movie, I think, but it didn’t make that much of an impression.
I checked the book out from the library before I went to see the movie in theaters, as I do. Reading the book made me start to fall in love with the characters and the story, and seeing the movie completed the process.
I saw and heard things I’d only pictured: Mrs. Bennett fuss and make a fool of herself, Kitty and Lydia giggle and swoon over soldiers in a way that focuses more on the uniform than the man wearing it, plain Mary strive for attention, and Mr. Bennett let it all go for the sake of his amusement and peace. And poor Jane and Lizzy striving to keep their family under control…
No movie can be a perfect adaptation of a book, but this one satisfactory told a story I loved in an acceptable amount of time. (Say what you will about attention spans, but I can’t sit in front of a tv screen/ movie screen for too long.) What more can you ask for?
