I’ve written poetry about this subject before, I think–it’s a subject that kind of comes to mind occasionally.
What about you? Do you have late night inspiration while you’re trying to sleep?
Midnight Poetry
Turn off the light
get comfortable
Left side
Back
Right side
Wiggle your head on the pillow
for the optimal position
Close your eyes
banish from your mind
to-do lists
worries
and bad memories
From the darkness left behind
unspools a line of poetry
Ignore it
Out flutters another line to join the first
Open your eyes
turn on the light
grab a pencil and paper and fix the words
to a memory more reliable
made of graphite and trees
Turn off the lights
close your eyes
get comfortable
And then…
All sorts of ideas come to me while trying to fall asleep. I seldom write them down, though, sadly. Some of them were, I’m sure, world changing. 🙂 Lovely poem! Are you putting together a collection yet? You should be!
You should start writing them down! You never know…
I will work on it, once I’ve gotten a current writing project out of the way. 🙂
I get this all the time, I’ll just randomnly get ideas for a story in the middle of the night and end up writing it down, it’s a little frustrating but the new ideas make up for that 🙂 Great poem! I love free verse.
Brains: why don’t they come with a sleep function?
