April is National Poetry Month. Writer’s Digest has a Poem A Day challenge, which I’m going to participate in. A few of those poems will end up here. Check out the link if you want to try the challenge, too.
The challenge for the seventeenth is a poem about pop culture. This made me think about one of my favorite bands–if you haven’t heard “If I Had a Million Dollars,” you should. Go listen now, the poem can wait. 😉

The Barenaked Ladies are Men
One of my favorite wielders of the lyrical arts
but only a few of their songs topped
the charts
played on the radio
until your ears bleed
because fame is a monster
you have to feed
until the gluttonous beast pops
Masters of the vocabulary blade
cutting wit
and polysyllabic gems made
with the greatest care
guaranteed to cause a second take
the words floating on a catchy beat
and filled with a hard to fake
glee that sparks a million smiles
