I was out for a walk a few months ago, just after sunset–and a day of rain–and there were all sorts of toads rustling in the fallen leaves.

Toad Crossing

Out walking

air crisp presentiment of fall

summer’s heat washed clean

by rain

clouds

and sunset

Something rustled in the fallen leaves

caught

pressed damp against the wall

dividing sidewalk

from

the rising hill of lawn

A toad hops

and scrambles against

an unyielding smooth white barrier

of concrete

refuses to be herded

to a narrow

section

When deposited

on rain soaked grass

crouches

still

and not at all thankful

About Caitlin Stern

I have a MA in English, and have so many fantasy/urban fantasy WIPs it's not even funny. I'm an avid reader of science fiction, fantasy, mystery, romance, biography, fiction, and anything else that catches my interest. I collect books, and bookmarks I find that are visually appealing and useful.
