This is a WIP, NaNoWriMo 2015, Forest Wed. (I’m skipping ahead.) Addan and Kaie (who was engaged), are married as symbols of their gods, and 2 weeks into their marriage, the gods’ blessing and the town are suffering, so they are sent on a hunting trip with two experienced hunters (Rui and Corliss). Kaie and Adann are fishing when Kaie hears a splash.

Kaie tossed his spear down beside his catch, raced down the shore, and hopped into the river, wading towards the spot where Adann had vanished, ready to help.

Adann surfaced, spraying water everywhere, started to rise, wavered, and then crouched in the shallow water. Clutched in her hands was a fish nearly a third her size, still alive despite her spear through its gills, thrashing its tail as it tried to break free.

With a grunt, Adann shoved to her feet, and carried her prize towards the shore, ending its struggle with a firmly applied rock to the head. She stood, hands on her hips, water running in rivulets down her arms and legs, her wrap sodden and clinging to her, but her smile triumphant.

“That was . . . ambitious,” Kaie said, after a moment.

Adann laughed, throwing her head back, tears streaming from her eyes. “That’s a nice way of saying crazy, but I was sure I could get it–it’s just leverage.”

She unknotted her hair, wringing it out before knotting it out of her way again, and used the sides of her hands to scrape the water off her skin. “I see you caught some, too, so we should go back, then.”

Beikife is a small town in something like the Amazon rain forest, protected by a pair of married gods. The gods are represented by human avatars, two young people chosen and married by divine power. The strength of the marriage represents the bond between the gods’ blessing, so the new forest wed must find a way to connect to each other, or the crops will fail, the rivers will flood, and the cursed monsters that live in the forest will claim many lives.

Surely he’ll be impressed by her fishing skill — and her ambition.

I love that she went for the hugest fish she could find. She has guts! I always enjoy your female characters, Caitlin. They are always so spunky – each in their own way.

Way to go, Adann! She’s definitely up for a challenge in fishing as well as the marriage. And she seems to be doing well with both at the moment, as Kaie was concerned that something had happened to her. All steps in the right direction. 🙂

  4. Surely she must be impressing him by now? He did seem concerned when she disappeared.

Wow, she’s my new hero. I feel so inadequate just going to the store and buying my fish…that’s already dead. lol. Awesome work, Caitlin!
