This is a WIP, NaNoWriMo 2015, Forest Wed. Adann and Kaie (who was engaged), are married as symbols of their gods, and 2 weeks into their marriage, the gods’ blessing and the town are suffering, so they are sent on a hunting trip with two experienced hunters (Rui and Corliss). On the third day, Kaie and Adann trap a kien (snake and anteater monster), kill it, and Adann is injured with Kaie fussing over her.
Kaie focused intently on wrapping her arm, arranging each rag strip just so, and tying them in place with a deft hand.
Adann flexed her arm, making sure she could use it, “Thank you.”
“Let’s get back to camp,” Kaie fetched his own bag, and walked beside her, sneaking anxious glances at they went.
Adann turned her head, catching his intent gaze, and promptly was hit in the leg with a low-hanging branch. She stumbled, and Kaie caught her on her good arm.
Despite her protests, she had to suffer him holding her arm for support the rest of the way back to the camp.
“We caught another monster, and Adann’s hurt!” Kaie announced as soon as they reached the camp, jerking both hunter’s attention to her.
“I’m fine, really,” Adann said, her jaw set stubbornly.
“Let me look at it,” Corliss demanded, and hauled the younger woman over to a fallen log, pressing her into sitting.

Beikife is a small town in something like the Amazon rain forest, protected by a pair of married gods. The gods are represented by human avatars, two young people chosen and married by divine power. The strength of the marriage represents the bond between the gods’ blessing, so the new forest wed must find a way to connect to each other, or the crops will fail, the rivers will flood, and the cursed monsters that live in the forest will claim many lives.
I do love that Kaie is concerned about her, and won’t brush it off as Adann hopes. Shows how their relationship is changing. Though now Adann seems more resistant than Kaie.
They each have their uses–Adann isn’t so good at accepting help.
Clearly Adann is trying to keep some distance between them. It looks like she’s not succeeding. Great snippet!
She has one of those ‘I can do it myself’ attitudes that causes no end of trouble…
Well at least Kaie is starting to think about her more than himself, at least a bit. Enjoyed the excerpt!
He isn’t a terrible person, really. But he can respond much better to obvious hurts than emotional ones.
Great snippet. Poor Adann – bad arm – tree takes her out.
Tweeted.
Monster killing isn’t an easy task. Especially monsters with claws!
Aw, he seems pretty protective at this point. And maybe she’ll appreciate it.
Kaie likes problems he can fix easily–but Adann isn’t so good at taking help!
Fine excerpt. Just what the couple needed.
Kaie makes a decent nurse, doesn’t he? 🙂
Their feelings are growing. I still wonder about Kaie’s old girlfriend… Did she go away quietly?
I skipped over that–can’t fit a whole story in snippets!
I think an “at” has sneaked in instead of an “as” in the third paragraph.
Seems like they are getting closer. 🙂 Great snippet!
Whoops, thanks!
Yes, the plan is working. 🙂
I’m glad she has a strong support group after her heroics.
She’s not in so much for support as a scolding, but the bandaging will be checked!
I can understand her not wanting people to fuss over her. Good thing Kaie’s there to insist.
Yes, independence is all well and good when there isn’t bleeding involved.
I like the concern he has for her.
Good. 🙂
When dealing with monsters, it’s always good to have a second opinion.
When dealing with nasty claw marks in a jungle environment, especially!
Funny how now that he’s finally being nice to her, she doesn’t want it!
Some people are just not good at accepting help.
He’s concern for her and didn’t let her go despite her protests. This has to be a good sign.
Yep! 🙂
These two are notoriously stubborn! One of these days they’ll give up. 😉 I’m also dropping a link to my snippet; apparently the form didn’t submit my link! http://witandtravesty.com/weekend-writing-warriors-snippet-63/
Of course they will, what’s romance without a HEA?
Hope these two can find a way to get along before things get really bad. I love Kaie’s concern for Adann.
He has his moments. 🙂
I like the fact that he is finally coming around but I get the impression that Adann isn’t quite sure of his concern.
Adann is just a tiny bit too independent for her own good.
So not infallible and she has help! This could be good!
She’s definitely not infallible–and it’s a good thing she has help. 🙂
