Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and The Bookish, and feature lists related to all things bookish–characters, authors, titles, and favorites. They’re an excellent way to find new interesting books on a variety of topics, and to find bloggers that love the books you do.

October 4:  All About The Villains — I don’t think we’ve done a villains topic since back in November 2010 so let’s revisit: top ten favorite/most compelling villains in books, top ten of the most vile villains/bad guys in books, top ten villains I secretly (or not so secretly) love, favorite tv villains, favorite comic book villains, ten “villains” of contemporary lit.

Here’s a list of villains who aren’t all bad. Probably. 🙂

hitchhiker's guide

1. Zaphod Beeblebrox. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy; Douglas Adams. He’s a thief, but so perfectly self-centered he’s entertaining.

six of crows

2. Kaz Brekker. Six of Crows; Leigh Bardugo. Really, his whole crew–but there is some honor among thieves.

fahrenheit 451

3. Guy Montag. Fahrenheit 451; Ray Bradbury. He burns books, but then he tries to save them.

brothers-in-arms

4. Mark Vorkosigan. Brothers in Arms; Lois McMaster Bujold. So originally he wanted to kill and replace his clone-brother, but he got better.

we have always lived

The Blackwood Sisters. We Have Always Lived in the Castle; Shirley Jackson. Terrible things, and yet… I feel for them.

lies of locke

Locke Lamora. The Lies of Locke Lamora; Scott Lynch. He lies and steals, but he loves his friends.

invisible-monsters

Narrator. Invisible Monsters; Chuck Palahniuk. Sometimes the search revenge has a silver lining.

good omens

The Antichrist. Good Omens; Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman. He’s a good kid, really.

frankenstein

Frankenstein’s Monster. Frankenstein; Mary Shelly. He can’t help the way he’s made, and he loves books.

Jekyll and Hyde

Dr. Jekyll. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde; Robert Louis Stevenson. He mad some poor mad scientist decisions, but haven’t we all?

  1. Kaz! Love that dude! 🙂 Nice choices.
    My TTT.

  2. @lynnsbooks says:

Like your choice of ‘the monster’ – definitely not his fault. Lynn 😀

  3. Mari says:

Lol, “antichrist” and “good kid” in the same sentence still makes me giggle. Even though he pretty much is in Good Omens. Lovely list!

  4. tiareleine says:

Is Kaz the villain, though? I’d say he’s really more of an anti-hero.

    Great list! 🙂

  5. Becca says:

Love your description of Locke Lamora 🙂 🙂

  6. Ed Hoornaert says:

Actually, I don’t think that I ever have made any mad scientist decisions. 😉
