This is a WIP, NaNoWriMo 2015, Forest Wed. Adann and Kaie (who was engaged), are married as symbols of their gods, and 2 weeks into their marriage, the gods’ blessing and the town are suffering, so they are sent on a hunting trip with two experienced hunters (Rui and Corliss). On the third day, Kaie and Adann  kill a kien (snake and anteater monster), Adann is injured, and later she and Kaie are chatting–and they share a moment of shared triumph over their kill.

Sometimes Kaie felt like he would burst if he didn’t get away from Adann, the air he breathed turning into spikes in his throat, his skin too tight, and his heart racing. Other times, like this, she was warm, and easy to get along with, and when her eyes caught the light, the flecks in them glowed like amber.

“Would you kiss me?”

He jerked away, toppling over, “No!” Embarrassed, he rolled into a crouch, and brushed bits of leaves and dirt off his skin and wrap.

“I’m sorry, I thought … we seemed to be having the kind of connection, when people kiss,” Adann sat up, folding her legs so she could rest her arms on her knees, and propping her chin on her arms, her face angled away from his.

Beikife is a small town in something like the Amazon rain forest, protected by a pair of married gods. The gods are represented by human avatars, two young people chosen and married by divine power. The strength of the marriage represents the bond between the gods’ blessing, so the new forest wed must find a way to connect to each other, or the crops will fail, the rivers will flood, and the cursed monsters that live in the forest will claim many

About Caitlin Stern

I have a MA in English, and have so many fantasy/urban fantasy WIPs it's not even funny. I'm an avid reader of science fiction, fantasy, mystery, romance, biography, fiction, and anything else that catches my interest. I collect books, and bookmarks I find that are visually appealing and useful.

I’m willing to bet she won’t have to ask him again, when the right time comes.

  2. Cara Bristol says:

She’s trying to move things along! It would be awkward to be in an arranged marriage.

  3. nancygideon says:

Poor Kaie. He’s got it bad and doesn’t even know it. Nice build up, Caitlin.

  4. Annnddd there goes all the progress she’s made. Really an interesting snippet and point in the story!

  5. Kim Magennis says:

Nothing like reading the signs, and getting your timing wrong. Well done, Caitlin. The emotion is building, and so is the connection.

  6. Frank Fisher says:

Aw man! Just when I thought they’d kiss. Awesome job making that sharp turn in your well-crafted snippet. 🙂

  7. Author Jessica E. Subject says:

Poor Adann. I hope Kaie feels bad now for reacting so poorly. She obviously caught him by surprise, but his reaction could make or break things. I guess we’ll have to wait and see… 🙂

  8. Holy smokes! Just when you think it’s safe to go into the water. . .

  9. LOL! Not the reaction she was hoping for. Rejection sucks. I think there may be a lot of regret coming from this moment…but whose and for how long is the question.

  10. Oh, she must feel so embarassed. I feel bad for her. I wonder if he’s going to regret his harsh reaction.

  11. Carrie-Anne says:

I experienced that so many times with my anti-kissing ex! I can totally feel her pain and rejection.

  12. Ugh, that’s rough! But I think he’s almost there. He’s going to have to get back in her good graces, though.

  13. I feel bad for her, but his reaction was a little hilarious, sorry! That aside, I really like this moment between the characters, and am hoping he surprises her! Clearly he’s noticing her personal and physical traits!

  14. Karen Michelle Nutt says:

He’s fighting the attraction, but it can’t last. If only he just kiss the girl… 🙂 I can’t help but feel sorry for her. She wants more out of the relationship, but he’s still resisting. Time will tell…

  15. Andrea R Huelsenbeck says:

Oh, Kaie, try it! You might like it.

  16. Diane Burton says:

Why doesn’t he just kiss her and get it over with? Because you like to torture not just your characters but the readers, too. Not nice. 🙂
