Invasive species aren’t a great idea, but they’re around. This one is actually fairly dire if you read up about them!

Chinese Tallow Tree

Mark the seasons by the fruit of this tree

not just leaves and spring blossoms like tassels

but a berry, first green as summer

As summer shades into autumn the green darkens

into brown-black and splits

falling to the ground with soft plinks

in a gentle constant rain

but the husks are far from gentle, stiff crescents

laying sharp points up for the unwary foot

As autumn chills the leaves blaze

red yellow purple orange

and drift down to join the husks while white

berries wait for the right time until

in the end the seasons leave the tree winter bare

About Caitlin Stern

I have a MA in English, and have so many fantasy/urban fantasy WIPs it's not even funny. I'm an avid reader of science fiction, fantasy, mystery, romance, biography, fiction, and anything else that catches my interest. I collect books, and bookmarks I find that are visually appealing and useful.
