This is a WIP, NaNoWriMo 2015, Forest Wed. Adann and Kaie (who was engaged), are married as symbols of their gods, and 2 weeks into their marriage, the gods’ blessing and the town are suffering, so they are sent on a hunting trip with two experienced hunters (Rui and Corliss). On the third day, Kaie and Adann are talking, and when Adann asks for a kiss, Kaie reacts badly and storms off alone to check on the other two hunters, running into an angry ryapi (ocelot/boar monster).
It bared sharp teeth at him in another scream of challenge, pawing the ground and readying for another charge. The ryapi were considerably larger than an ocelot, and rarely climbed trees like the ocelots would, but their bigger size and focused anger made them dangerous opponents.
“Kaie!” Adann gasped, skidding into view, grabbing onto a tree to stop herself.
The ryapi’s ears twitched in her direction, and Kaie had a sudden vision of her getting attacked again, hampered by her injured arm, and ending up gored on the monster’s wicked tusks.
“Stay back!” he warned, as the ryapi charged, crashing into his stomach, jaws reaching for his throat. He jammed the spear crosswise into its mouth, bringing up his knees to protect his belly, reaching for his knife with his free hand.
Suddenly, the monster convulsed and squealed, and over its shoulder, he saw Adann retreating, her face determined. He shoved the ryapi away again, ripping the spear free.

Beikife is a small town in something like the Amazon rain forest, protected by a pair of married gods. The gods are represented by human avatars, two young people chosen and married by divine power. She hasn’t really rescued him all that much–they both had problems with the previous monster, really. But this particular bad choice did need some rescuing from! 😀

Yes, she came to his rescue, but I like how he was concerned about her, wanted her to stay back because she was already injured. That says a lot right there. Great snippet! And all the best with NaNo! I’m doing it, too. 🙂
Kaie has a pretty strong protective streak. Unfortunately for him, Adann, who has older brothers, does not much like to be protected!

Very intense scene! I also like how she came to his rescue. That’s such a nice reversal from how men are usually depicted as the ones coming to the rescue.
Adann’s smart enough to not go running into the carnivore and monster-filled jungle… Not that she doesn’t need rescuing now and then. 😉
