This is a WIP, NaNoWriMo 2016, currently called River, Tree, Mountain. It’s science fiction, set on a colony planet, six generations in–with about 10% of the population born “marvels,” who have special abilities like dowsing, healing, or creating fire. The protagonist, Rekka, is a spark (fire), and about to sign a very important contract.
The morning after her eighteenth birthday, Rekka stood in front of a man she barely knew, and listened to the lawyer reading out loud the contract she was about to sign. She was ready for this to be over, but of course this was just the start–the start of a whole new life.
“Do you, Rekka Lang, swear to abide by the terms of this contract?” the lawyer asked.
“I do so swear,” she said firmly.
“Do you, Brenton Sofia, swear to abide by the terms of this contract?” the lawyer repeated.
“I do so swear,” Brenton said, his voice calm and unwavering. He was six years older than her, and broader in the shoulders than men her age. His dirty blond hair was dyed emerald green, and had been orange, blue, and red in the several months she’d known him.
As if he felt her gaze on him, he glanced up, and his pale blue eyes met hers. He smiled, the expression warming his eyes, the same charming man who had showed up almost a year ago, to speak to her and her parents, and explain what he could offer her.

Life on the colony planet of Kaibou was going uneventfully until the second generation of colonists was born on the planet, at some, at a young age, began showing various psychic abilities. When those people, called marvels, grew up, many of them formed companies, building compounds to live in and raise their children. Now on the seventh generation, marvels are born both within and without company walls, and all must work together to use their gifts and make a living on a still wild land.

Interesting title and premise. I can imagine all sorts of interesting complications in a society where psychic skills are emerging.
I do love to play with characters with special abilities. (Also, I’d like to be able to start fires with my mind. Think of the savings on matches!)
Would you set fire to every copy of your competitors’ books so people could only read yours?

Working in the legal field, I’m very interested to know what the conditions are. And the consequences of breaking them! Nice start, Caitlin.
I didn’t want to go into a lot of detail all in one place, but I’m trying to work it in as I go. Heavens knows I’ll probably need to do a little research for my edits!
