Shield of Namarr is a sword-and-sorcerer type fantasy WIP, set in a kingdom that suffers from magically-created, vicious creatures. Three friends have sought out a mage, and gone to the mage’s house in order to purchase a potion.

“And here’s my house,” the mage waved at a two-story with cream siding and bright purple trim, behind a wrought-iron fence painted the same purple.

“It looks… lovely,” Shan said, when Auber and Reagan had both been silent, staring up at the building for several awkward moments.

“Thank you,” the mage tapped the right-hand lion’s head post framing the gate, which swung open silently. “After you.”

Shan half-shoved Auber and Reagan into motion, herding them down the wide cobblestone path to the front door, which was set with a star mosaic of tile and mirror that glittered in the sun filtering down from the branches overhead. Two large trees shaded the house and parts of the yard, with flowers and plants growing in beds everywhere, with little gravel paths winding around the beds in a maze-like profusion.

A four-foot tall oriental dragon reared on one side of the path, a manticore—with a human head, lion body, and scorpion tail—curled up on the other side. That’s an odd way to carve a statue, Shan thought, as the dragon turned to face them.

Originally, Shield of Namarr was intended to be a very short snippet, but some things I wrote at the end raised some questions–which led to more story. I’m trying to decide whether I want to do some world-building and character development so I can keep writing, or drop it.

Shan, Auber, and Reagan visit a Stonespeller, a mage who works mostly in animated stone, to buy a potion that will help them recover a lost stone, the Shield of Namarr, which powers a shield that keeps magically-created, dangerous creatures from entering the city they live in. Failure to return the Shield quickly will have deadly consequences for their friend,  Jamie, whose life-force is currently powering the shield-spell.

Argh! Hope it’s a friendly manticore! Wonderful descriptions!

  2. ED Martin says:

Great description! I can easily picture his house, and it makes him seem eccentric but harmless – or at least I hope so, for the MCs’ sakes!

  3. Lost in the beautiful description until I sensed danger in the sculpture. Compelling eight. See where it takes you. If you don’t like the path, you’ll know what to do. You’re at the helm.

This is the kind of garden I’d have, were I not terrible at keeping plants alive–minus the magic statues, of course.

I have so many ideas, sometimes it’s hard to prioritize, and then a second opinion helps. 🙂

  4. I LOVE the world building and the premise. And the purple trim and fence LOL. Can;t wait to read more, excellent excerpt!

  5. Botanist says:

The last sentence made me laugh! I was just waiting for something in the garden to move unexpectedly!

Definitely seems worth pursuing to me! Love the snippet and the blurb.

  7. Obviously the magician likes bright purple. I’m not so sure his visitors share his tastes. Aren’t oriental dragons friendly–sort of?

    • caitlinstern says:

This is a seriously bright house–like a Painted Lady, not to everyone’s taste.

Generally, they are intelligent and friendly enough, but this is a statue, not an actual dragon, so no guarantees.

  8. burnsmillie says:

Oh so delightful. I’m in love with this story already!

  9. Sarah W says:

Keep it! Build that world, develop those characters, and let me read it! Please?

  10. Carrie-Anne says:

I love your descriptions! One of the creatures I had in one of my apps (which won’t open anymore since an update) was a manticore. I might’ve bred 4-5 of them.

  11. Ooh, I like this snippet 🙂 Especially, that last little bit 😉 I think it’s definitely worth pursuing…see where it takes you. After all, what do you have to lose? Great 8!

  12. Great description and a fabulous cliffhanger;).
